Pet Day Admin

The agricultural part of school pet day takes lots of organisation for it to run smoothly.  These are the steps we take at Springston to make the job easier for our visiting voluntary judges.

Develop registration sheets for each section:
1. Lambs
2. Poultry
3. Pigs
4. Kids
5. Dairy calves
6. Beef calves

Awards on the day:
We also include House Points for the day and an overall placings recieve a sticker on their certificate which is awarded on the day. Later the results are measured to determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placings to allocate points towards agricultural badges.  (See note below)

Students are registered before judges arrive:
They are given a sticker with a number so the judging is unbiased e.g. L - J1 (Lamb Junior 1)  The documentation is given to the judges on their arrival.  There needs to be 1-2 adults to help manage the students, depending on the numbers involved.

Situating the agricultrural animals:
Agricultural animals are tethered in a place separate from the rest of Pet Day.  This is to keep people from walking through the area as judging takes place. This could also be achieved by putting up a ring of cones or ribbon barrier.

The process:
Categories are lined up in order of their number.  Three - four cones are situated to allow for a lining up point, a starting point and tow places for jusges to stand.  A type of incomplete triangle works well.

As you would normally get two sets of lamb judges, please allow for two judging spaces with their own cones.  Contact the organising school with the numbers and types of animals so judges who are not needed don't have to go to your school to find out!

With school pet day, an agricultural project is required.  This should be marked and the results included on the registration form.  The marking of this projects should be out of 40.  (Further notes on projects)

These levels are what we have determined as a school.  It is just important that you give children an opportunity to earn 16 points at best and you are are consistent.

How to determine allocation of Agricultural Club Badges:
It is essential to keep a record of points earned over the years, if only to stop you going crazy and to help you answer interested parents when they inquire as to how many points their child has earned!

This is how we collate the information over the year. Note that we also record ST - start date for joining the club and award date of A1, RB and GB.  I will post up images of these later.

Please click on the images to get a larger view.

Our badges go in this order:
1.  Achievement 1 = 26 points (Takes minimum of 2 years)
2.  Red Bar = 16 points
3.  Green Bar = 16 points
4.  School Achievement Certificate  = 16 points
5.  Leaver's Rosette = 16 points and Year 8 student

The last two awards have been added by Springston School.  You need to only award once the points have been achieved.  We count extra points towards the next award for the following year.

Joe Blogs in the above 'Project Goats' image will not achieve his Red Bar this year but will recieve an Agricultural Club Certificate indicating he has earned 14 points towards a Red Bar.

As seen in the collation sheet, student may enter under both the categories of Agricultural Pet or Agricultural garden.   As only the best result will be counted, it is best to only do one project and make a great job of it.  Most of our students focus their project on the animal and just have a judge come to visit their garden for the experience.
